There are a total of 10 performing groups maintained by the PHS Band Department.
Not all of these groups perform on a regular basis, and not all are open to all
students. These ensembles include Symphonic Band, Concert Band, Campus Band,
Jazz Ensemble, Jazz Combo, the Panther Marching Band, two Pep Bands, Woodwind
Choir, and Brass Choir. Incoming Freshmen and students who were members of
Campus Band during the previous school year auditioned last February/March for
placement in either Symphonic/Concert Band or Campus Band. New students
moving to the PH School District attending PHS are required to audition for the
director(s) before enrollment in a specific band is verified.
Some band members are invited to become members of the pit orchestra for the
high school musical, which occurs on alternating years during the fall. Those
students who are at the top of the section of their particular instrument (9-12,
beginning with Symphonic Band members) receive initial invitations. The opportunity
for participation then goes "down the line" until the correct instrumentation is
selected. Rehearsals are held after school hours, beginning in October, and run
through the performance dates (usually the week before Thanksgiving.)
The same process is used for selecting members who perform with the PHS
Symphonic Orchestra on their spring concert. Students earn credit toward the letter
award in band for participation in both these ensembles.
Concert Bands
:: Park Hill South High School Band ::
The Park Hill South High School Symphonic Band, conducted by Dr. Miller, is the primary performing ensemble in the PHS Band Program.
Auditions for chair placement in Symphonic and Concert band are held at the end of marching season. Students who are selected to
perform in this group are very dedicated and have reached a high level of achievement through individual work and/or private study. Many
of the members of this ensemble will become members of the Kansas City All-District Band(s) and the Missouri All-State Band. Most of
the members of Symphonic Band are involved in solo/small ensemble work during District and State Music Festival time in the spring.
Bands the caliber of the Symphonic Band are regularly invited (through recorded audition) to perform at local, state, regional, national and
international festivals and clinics. All performances are required.
While listed as the "second" band at Park Hill South, the Concert Band, conducted by Mr. Boyd, performs music on the same level as many
of the other high school bands in the K.C. area, and some members of this group will also become members of the All-District and
All-State Bands. After marching season members of Concert Band perform in three regularly scheduled concerts at PHS, as well as the
MSHSAA Large Ensemble District Music Festival in March. All performances are required.
Campus Band, conducted by Mr. Bell, is the entry-level band in the PHS band program. Nearly all freshmen, several sophomores and a
few juniors comprise the membership in Campus Band. This ensemble's focus is on technical development and performance. Usually
four concerts are scheduled during the school year, with an optional performance at the Worlds of Fun Festival of Bands. Although
students are eligible to audition for All-District and All-State Bands, they usually wait to audition until they become a member of Symphonic
or Concert Band. All performances are required.
