PHS Band Update 021819

I apologize for the length of this communication.

Please help us congratulate Kendra Slaughter on her participation in the All-Junior Honor Band at the University of Missouri this past weekend!

Also, a big thank you to everyone who helped with our Solo & Ensemble event last week. It would have not have been possible without you!

This week will be very confusing with ACT testing and adjusted schedules for students. Please make sure that all of our students except seniors understand that we will be playing in class on Wednesday.

We are extending our fundraiser to Friday because of the adjusted schedule. Please note in the newly revised lettering system that students can earn 10 points for selling 5 items.

We are also lowering the requirement to letter by 10 points to adjust for the last basketball game being canceled. Unfortunately, it’s a different week but the same story, we will send out an email to help let everyone know if the district cancels after school activities for Tuesday.

Finally, please join us for the Jazz concert on Thursday evening!

February 19

  • Band room open for Solo & Ensemble prep until 4:30pm
  • Jazz Band rehearsal 5:30pm to 8:00pm
  • Winter Guard practice at PHS from 6:00pm to 9:00pm
  • PIMB meeting at 6:30pm

February 21

  • PHS/PHHS Jazz Concert at PHS – 7:30pm to 9:00pm
  • Winter Guard practice at PHS from 6:00pm to 9:00pm

Looking forward to March 2, please note that the event is for all students in the concert and symphonic bands. I will take blame for the confusion by calling the event “Symphonic Camp,” which is a name that is commonly used by other programs around the country for this type of an event. The Winter Camp/Symphonic Camp can be best described as a one day version of the Summer Camp that we do with the marching band. We are bringing in several clinicians to conduct the groups and teach sectionals. This gives our students access to much more individual instruction than we can normally provide during the regular school day. As a reminder, the event is from 9:30am to 4:30pm

Speaking of Summer Camp, our camp will be July 22 – 26 and July 29 – August 2. We plan to send out a list of dates before spring break as more events become finalized.

I’ve gotten a few questions about what our fundraising is supporting, and the short answer is multiple opportunities. For all members of the Jazz Band and Winterguard, items they directly sell will go back to help those groups with their travel this spring. For everyone in the general band population, it’s going to help the different events that we host. Every time we host an event with judges or clinicians, the program pays them for their service, which for most of our events adds up very quickly. Please encourage our students to do their part to take ownership in the program. Our success would not be possible without everyone’s support.
